Things to do around Davis and Woodland CA for the long weekend of November 9, 2012

With Veteran’s Day on Monday you’ve got a long weekend to fill. Here are some top ideas for what’s happening around Davis (and Woodland).

Mondavi’s Best Bets

With a rapturous return from an eight-year hiatus, Dance Theatre of Harlem brings a legacy of 40 years of creative expression. Among the world’s foremost interpreters of the Balanchine canon, the company has garnered critical acclaim for history-making productions across an eclectic repertoire. Lauded as “one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings” by The New York Times in its inaugural year, the company makes its return in full force under the artistic direction of founding member and former principal dancer Virginia Johnson.

Joshua Bell, violin
Sam Haywood, piano
Joshua Bell has enchanted audiences worldwide with his breathtaking virtuosity and tone of rare beauty. Newly named Music Director of The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Bell is equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestra leader and composer who performs his own cadenzas to several of the major concerto repertoire. He returns to the Mondavi Center on the heels of two consecutive sold-out performances and will be accompanied by the critically acclaimed British pianist Sam Haywood.
Schubert: Rondo for Violin and Piano in B Minor, Op. 70
Franck: Sonata in A Major
Prokofiev: Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 2 in D Major, Op. 94 bis

Additional works to be announced from the stage.

Ballet Folklórico de México
de Amalia HernándezBallet Folklórico de México
de Amalia Hernández, Sun • Nov 11, 2012 • 7PM

As the oldest and most celebrated dance company in Mexico, Ballet Folklórico shares the beauty of the universe in motion through Mexican dances from the pre-Colombian era, the Hispanic Viceroy period and the popular period of the Revolutionary years. In 1952, dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández founded the Ballet Folklórico de México, having embarked at a very early age on a never-ending quest to rescue the dancing traditions of Mexico. With more than 200 awards recognizing the troupe’s artistic merits, the performance honors the traditions of both storytelling and dance.
