Things to Do around Davis and Woodland – Weekend of November 2, 2012

In the lull between Halloween and Thanksgiving there’s a lot to around Davis (and Woodland).

Mondavi’s Best Bets

ETHEL <br>with special guest Todd Rundgren
ETHEL with special guest Todd Rundgren Tell Me Something Good

The 1970s was a restless, intelligent, dissatisfied time—a decade of contradictions, a decade of loss, a decade of discovery. Visionary string quartet ETHEL celebrates this vibrant era with an explosive, beautiful collaboration with 1970s icon Todd Rundgren—a visionary in his own right—in a program that is scheduled to include Lou Harrison’s String Quartet Set(1972), Kimo Williams’s Quiet Shadows, arrangements of music by Sun Ra and a fascinating new work by rising star Judd Greenstein.

Stephen Waarts, violin<br>Miles Graber, piano
Stephen Waarts, violin
Miles Graber, piano

Like most talented young musicians, Stephen Waarts has won his fair share of awards and prizes (including a Grand Prize at the 2008 Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition). More telling, however, is the justified praise heaped on the young violinist by critics and judges, including Michael White ofThe Telegraph: “Not just the mechanical wonder that some of his fellow entrants were, running through a repertoire of immaculately learnt tricks, but a soul!” A former student of Itzhak Perlman and San Francisco Symphony Concertmaster Alexander Barantschik, Waarts now attends the Curtis Institute of Music.

B.B. King
B.B. King
His reign as King of the Blues has been as long as that of any monarch on earth. And B.B. King continues to wear his crown well, singing and playing the blues with relentless passion, thrilling audiences and influencing generations.

Julie and the Jukes
Julie and the Jukes
A Northern California Band playing pure, classic blues, the ensemble is a four-piece combo including guitar, harmonica, bass, and drums. Julie and the Jukes bring to life the classic Chicago blues of Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, the Memphis sounds of B. B. King and Albert King, the Texas style of Freddie King, and the classic women’s blues of Bessie Smith and Ida Cox.

Shakespeare's Globe
Shakespeare’s Globe Hamlet

Shakespeare’s Globe reinvents Elizabethan touring theatre for the 21st century. Using a stage design inspired by images from the time, the Globe’s travelling players recreate all the fun and excitement of early theatre. Featuring some of Shakespeare’s best known speeches, this pared-down production of Hamlet brilliantly captures the corrupting influence of power, the intensity of young love and the passion of a wronged man.
