One Person's Ashtray Is Another Person's Art

In the unlikely event you or your Tandem roommate is a secret (you know we can still smell it on you, right?) smoker, you’re probably aware that UC Davis went totally tobacco-free on the first of the year. Now design professor Ann Savageau is running a program where the concrete, 300-pound former ashtrays that used to dot the campus are being repurposed into…well, a lot of different things. Instead of being chucked in the landfill, these anachronisms are enjoying a second, more benign and beautiful life.
