Things to do in Davis, CA the weekend of August 31, 2012
There are a lot of things to do in Davis this weekend. Big movies opening in town include:
Clyde and Stephanie Brenek see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst , only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.
The true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers: bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream in Prohibition-era Virginia. In this epic gangster tale, inspired by true-life tales of author Matt Bondurant’s family in his novel “The Wettest County In The World”, the loyalty of three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation’s most notorious crime wave.
Here are live event highlights from our friends at The Davis Dirt.

Apartment Move-Out Waste Reduction Program @ City of Davis, Various Locations Free
When Fri, August 31, 12am – 8pm
Description Every year the City of Davis Recycling Program teams up with apartment managers to encourage reuse of items and to reduce the amount of waste that happens during the yearly August move-out. Davis Recycling staff sets up donation stations at participating apartment properties, and residents donate items they no longer want or need. Local non-profit groups and other apartment residents stop by and take the items they want. The end result is that good, usable items are kept out of the trash. This year, the AMOWRP will run from August 27- September 1. During that time, volunteers are needed to work whatever hours they can (morning, afternoon or evening) to help keep the donation stations organized (place cushions on sofas, stack books neatly, throw trash in the garbage, tidy-up the area, etc.), and sort materials (separate clothes, linens, shoes, house wares, etc.). Volunteers are invited to keep any items they wish that have been donated. For details on how to volunteer, go to www.facebook.co
